No Alliuments 1 & 2 are all about the freedom when I paint. These beautiful Allium flowers were gifted to me for my birthday, from both a close friend and two darling aunts…they know me well.
For this piece, I had the background complete for some time, layers and layers of a background with the chaos of the words and paint, altered by the structure of the lines. The layered background was completed during a period of uncertainty, a little bit of imposter syndrome thrown in and not really knowing what direction to take.
As the piece started to come to life, my vision for the background started to materialise. I grew to love it, and my head told me time and time again to ‘trust the process’
As I reached the final furlongs, the alliums presented themselves at just the right time, literally as I had the headspace and energy to complete.
Alliums are delicate, intricate flowers that together form a bold globe of beauty. When the flowers multiply, so does their impact. They perfectly complemented the energetic, dark and deep backgrounds.
I just love the juxtaposition of the vibrant background with the delicacy yet boldness of the alliums.
And for me, art is all about the feeling. When I had completed the two pieces, I thought about the journey of these paintings. Getting into the studio was a challenge, trusting in the process yet being unsure was testing, however, when I paint, I’m in flow. I have no issues, my brain stops its endless thought-loops, I have no ‘aliments’
The name came about by blending allium with ailments, and ‘no alliuments’ in a reminder of how good it feels to paint. I feel good, I feel free, and I am content.
Whenever I look at No Alliuments 1 and No Alliuments 2, it reminds me of the importance of being creative and sometimes pushing on through that uncertainty.
I hope that when you look at No Alliuments, the piece will bring you to a place where you feel happy, where you feel joy, and where you feel at peace.
