I paint things that bring me joy, and Anthurium plants have always been a showstopper. I've loved them since I owned my first home; this is what my mum used to buy me. I love anthurium flowers in single stems, coupled together, or with foliage. There’s a plastic nature to them…a perfect look but always with little imperfections too. Their glossy finish combined with that thick, vibrant centre stem just really packs a punch.
When thinking about what I would paint, I just love Anthuriums and how they make me smile. They're also known as the Flamingo flower, so we have Flamingo number 1 and Flamingo number 2; they're sisters, not twins, and I love them both.
I've added some gold leaf to the paintings, and also texture, to capture the energy I felt when painting these pieces. There’s a richness to the colours and texture to the flowers.
I hope you love Flamingo 1 as much as I do.
Flamingo 2…for the originals.
