February came and the rain just kept coming, day after day. I remember properly needing to look for the light, actively searching for it, because it wasn't offering itself up easily.

And then, little by little, the brightness started to appear. Daffodils and crocuses - little bursts of yellow and gold pushing up through the wet ground, completely unbothered by how relentless the rain had been. It stopped me every time I passed them. They were the first proper sign that spring was on its way, even with everything still grey and dripping around them.

That's what I wanted to hold onto in this piece. The daffodils here aren't neat or polite; they're big and loud and a bit wild, gold and amber thrown against a deep, stormy blue, with that bright yellow running round the edge like the last of the light breaking through.

I worked on the piece using a lot of movement, drips and splatter left in rather than cleaned up, because that's honestly what the ground looked like that February, everything a bit soaked and unruly, and still somehow beautiful.

I think the thing I keep coming back to is that regardless of whatever else is going on, the seasons are steady. They come. There are always brighter evenings and mornings ahead of us and fresh spring days waiting their turn.

This painting is all about optimism. When I look at it, I smile, even on the darker days. After the Rain casts its own brightness, a reminder that the light always finds its way.

After the Rain …for the originals.
